Students to learn about money and win

STUDENTS IN BARBADOS now have a fun way to learn about managing money and win some at the same time.

The Caribbean Regional Technical Assistance Centre (CARTAC) has launched an essay competition for school students between the ages of nine and 18 at all schools across Barbados including private schools.

Picture of Therese Turner Jones, Programme Coordinator of CARTACIn explaining the rationale for the competition at this time, Therese Turner-Jones, Programme Coordinator of (CARTAC) noted that financial education and responsible money management must begin at an earlier age. “The world our children are being reared in is much more complex, financially and technologically, with far more choices for spending money than when I was growing up. This environment presents a great teaching opportunity for children which parents, teachers and the community would be loathe to miss.”

The essay competition is designed to promote greater awareness of the importance of financial management among students and their parents and guardians. “We have found that children are great influencers of their parents and if a child, after entering this competition, can encourage his or her parent or sibling or cousin to assume greater financial responsibility that would be extremely encouraging,” Turner-Jones added.

The topic for the essay is: “You receive cash as a birthday gift from your favourite uncle or aunt. But you must use it wisely! Write an essay describing what you’d do with your money and why.” Prizes include bank accounts, laptops, book vouchers and websites which are sponsored by CARTAC, Barbados National Bank Inc., Creative Cycle, D.E. Computers and PAGES Bookstore.

The deadline is May 7, 2010. Entry forms and further information can be found on http://www.financialliteracycaribbean.com and http://www.facebook.com/financialliteracyforthecaribbean or by calling 256-0505.
